just got a baby oscar bout 1.5-2" and hes in my 75 gallon cycled tank. my water is reading fine very low nitrites no ammonia. This is the 3rd day ive had him and just today after i did my weekly water change (35-40%) he is breathing very rapidly the water is reading 79.2 degrees. Anyone have any idea why he breathing like this??

What is "low nitrates"? Did you do a test after your WC?
Maybe add an air stone just as a precaution.

Have you noticed any problems between the O & your Bichir?

You should have an airstone in the tank no matter what. With large bio-load fish it is a must IMO.

Give us some more details.

what kind of dechlorinator do you use? but i agree its most likely not enough oxygen i would add an air stone, how much surface turbulance is there from your filter?

Not really... I have no aeration in my O's tank and he's never had any problems. Aeration never hurts though, that's for sure.

More details definitely needed though. All I see is 75 gallon, had O for few days, "low" nitrates, and 79 degrees.

How about, tank mates, diet, any flashing, chasing if tank mates are involved, filtration setup.

I will say, typically with heavy breathing it's usually an 02 problem.

i do have an airstone in there, ill lower the temp hopefully to get more oxygen in there, hes doing fine with my bichir no aggression between the two whatsoever. his diet at the moment is currently hikari pellets (staple,bio-gold,massivore rarely). nitrites were down after WC almost to 0.

Is he showing any other unusual behaviour, or is it just the breathing?

if you have an airstone in there and there is turbulence from the filter at the top of the tank then i doubt its O2 and would keep the temp the same, any amount of nitrites is really not good though, what are the nitrate levels? are they registering yet? and what kind of dechlorinator do you use?
