New oscar help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oscars are one of the most durable fish i have encountered in all my years of fish keeping. I have seen them survive in every tank setup and water condition possible. He should adapt to his living conditions, unless you have a serious water issue.

He NEVER said low nitrates... its nitrites

Doh, typo. Damn low nitrates is such a pain right? j/k :grinno:

nitrites were down after WC almost to 0.

Water conditions aren't "fine" if you have nitrite readings. Nitrites should always read 0 bro. Just reading back over your original post here. I don't think your tank was done cycling if you were reading nitrites. Completely cycled tank should read 0 ammonia 0 nitrites 5-20 nitrates. These are definitely common signs a fish would have from being in a partially cycled tank with nitrite and or ammonia spikes.

if you had any nitrites, your tank isn't fully cycled. You're supposed to have 0 at all times.

Not at all times, unless you have MASSIVE bio media.

If you have 2 fish in your tank and add 5 one day i am sure that you will get amonnia and nitrite readings for upto a week even after adding extra bacteria to colonize.

yeah because the media would be undergoing another cycle from the sudden massive increase in bio load, even if you had tons of bio media it would still do this since no matter how much bio media you have it will still only house the amount of bacteria that can survive off of the amount of waste being produced. but normally from just adding one small fish this wouldn't happen so most likely his tank hadn't finished its initial cycle yet

but OP your O should be fine just keep an eye on your water params, Os are pretty tough fish and he should be alright in the long term once everything finishes cycling

i dont think it would be nitrates or water conditions what so ever you bought a NEW fish especially an oscar when their sensitive lol you shouldve not turned on the lights and let him settle in besides a 75 gallon for a 2 inch oscar? are you kidding me? not enough air? lol

if there is not enough circulation or surface turbulence from the filter then no matter how large the tank is the water wont hold enough oxygen for a fish to breathe properly, not saying this was the issue just saying your logic is flawed

:iagree:

maybe add some stress coat or u didnt add enough dechlorinator sometimes thats the problem after a pretty large water change
