I finally found a good deal on a tank; 75 gal for $170 at a lfs. It should be here in 2 weeks; plenty of time to plan my set up. I also bought 2 plecos; the larger went in the tub with the 3 oscars, the other went in my 10gal with the feeders. Eventually, I will put both in the 75 with the oscars. I am told that sand makes a good substrate and is easy to clean. I have some live plants I will put in the 75; I will anchor them with river pebbles as I am told oscars are rough on plants. I know the fish will outgrow the 75, but I plan on building a larger tank before that happens. I would appreciate any tips on the best setup for this tank size with the 3 oscars and 2 plecos. Thanks everyone, Tom

Unless your tank is in or near direct sunlight the live plants cut down on algae growth from what I've read. The pleco's aren't going to have any food for awhile so you might find them sucking the slime coat off of your oscars. As far as the plants go, I'd go with plastic, don't get attached to live, because the oscars will pull them up out of the gravel and shred them the moment your not in the room.

heh live plants blow after a while, just buy a nice little 3ft tank and pimp it out with Co2 make it a nice planted tank, it looks hot!

:D

Sand isnt always the easiest or best to clean, you have to make sure that you don't suck all of the sand up when you clean it, it all goes right into the siphon,

3 oscars and 2 plecos are going to be a huge bio-load on a 75gal. in a very short while. Oscars grow very fast, and plecos are pooping machines. Of course you seem to know this. Here's hoping you can keep up on large, frequent water changes. Go barebottom until you get a bigger setup. Oscars dig everything up, and rip plants to shreds anyway. Good luck!

my oscar is 6 years old, about 35 cms and he leaves in a planted aquarim and touches nothing! they just have to learn, they are very smart fish.

the aqua is planted with echinodorus and anubias... a lot:character0004:

Interesting. How does one teach an Oscar not to dig up stuff?

I'd like to know that too. Mine destroys anything that I put in the tank. I added ping pong balls to the tank one time to keep his attention away from the plants but he eventually got bored and shredded them.

i agree with you on the sand.....i have sand in my 75 gallon and cuz i think it is a lot easier to clean......but yea that's going to be a huge bioload on a 75 ....what kind of filtration do you plan on using? 400th POST!!!

I am going to use an Aqua clear 110 power filter. According to my lfs it can filter 60-110 gal tank at 500 gph set at max flow rate. I plan to set it at the minimum flow rate (170 gph) because I am told a slower rate cleans the water better.
