New Oscar Tank Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i prefer Seachem prime for a water conditioner. I did not read all the posts so just suggestion you get API Master fresh water test kit also. If you are going to a fish in cycle water changes will need to be every other day, always dosing for size of tank, not amount of water replacing at 70 to 80% as prime lasts 48 hours and good to 1 ppm, can dose up to 5x but should not need to. full cycle will take 6 to 8 weeks with fish in.

Hey popss,

I've read many of your replies over at OscarFish.com. Anyways, the tank has been running since July, 2012 so in this case we're way past the need to discuss cycling a new tank. Thanks though. That info echoed many of the comments I got from the guys here at MFK and from the guys on the OFish forums (you know who I mean).

I've been using Prime since day one and will continue to use it. I recommend it to all my fishkeeping friends. As you have suggested, I do dose for the entire water volume of the tank at each water change (and don't fire up the filters again until the Prime has been added). Water changes average about 50% of the 155gl volume each time. Though I have done a 70% WC on occasion.

I also agree with your other suggestion, the API Master Test Kit (Freshwater). I bought one of those prior to the setup of the tank. I recommend this to others also. Good stuff.

Beautiful fish and love the shelf idea for the filters. I have a herniated disc in my lower back so I may have to look into doing something like that for the stand that I built.

Thanks Grishtargan, if you have back problems then a decent dolly and these sliding shelves are just what the doctor ordered. I ended up with the Rev-A-Shelf brand. Easily found at HD or Lowes. Just make sure you measure your filter base width and cabinet (stand) door opening carefully. Also, use the dimensions printed on the respective shelving box at the store. Don't go by the retailers specs. You'll save yourself the hassle of a possible return. Also, they're not cheap. depending on the size, you could pay $50 each. You've been warned.

Good luck and good hunting!
