I was contacted by someone who asked if I'd be willing to come pick up a fish he no longer wanted. I asked him what kind of fish is it. "I dont know". Well can you take a picture of it? ...he sent me this

Yeah... SMH. That orange blob is a dead goldfish. It smelled SO bad. But look what I found in that cess pool.

This is in Laz's old tank. There are no other fish in there right now. Time to go read up on polys again. Is that black patch an injury or just coloration? Its in the scales not just on the surface. Tips on behaviors that indicate trouble? As bad as that tank was, I wouldnt be surprised if this poor thing still croaks.
Hello
I have one of those fish as well, given to me. He lives in a 30 gal with a Pictus catfish. So with a fish like that if I'm reading this right he needs a place to hide? Also does he eat anything other then live fish?

Well I'm no expert on this species. But I have rescued a lot of fish and I know that anytime you have a fish that is sick, stressed, or just new to the tank, they seem to be calmer and more comfortable when they have a place to hide away until they can build the confidence to come out. As for the feeding, they can also be fed carnivore pellets. I dont use live fish to feed. Too many risks involved

I'm not trying to make money on her. She's had it rough. I just want to see her in a place she can thrive and will never be neglected again.

Fed her some cut up squid this evening. Any foods to avoid for this species? Have had time to read everything I need to right now
Hello,

thank you so much for rescuing this bichir! It makes me really sad when people neglect animals. Thank you for taking her in and providing care for her. As mentioned in the posts by tlindsey tlindsey and S skjl47 , she is a senegal bichir. Another name for bichirs is polypterus. If you are looking for information, there's a polypterus section on this forum. :)

foods:

Staples: most people on here alternate between bite-sized pieces of tilapia, and sinking pellets(Hikari Carnivore, Hikari Cichlid, NLS, etc)
Frequency: everyday or every other day.
The larger the poly is...7-8inch +, you can feed every other day. That's my current routine

Others: red wrigglers, night crawlers, black worms, shrimp.

Occasionally: Catfish can be fed 1x a week or so. This is oily and can help prevent digestive problems such as bloat. Best when fed the day before a water change

Try to Avoid: Beefheart(high in fat), chicken( not easily digestible), bloodworms(low nutritional value)

tlindsey tlindsey : Does it look platinum to you? It looks like a washed out/stressed regular sen to me. However, I could be very wrong and it could be very light colored. Either way, great pickup and great addition! Polys have so much personality!

That is awesome of you to take her in!
It is not a platinum sen. Its just washed out. If it were platinum that dummy wouldn't have had it first off. No one is going to spend $300 on a platinum sen and leave it in that kind of filth. It probably came from one of the big box stores for $8 and some how managed to survive.
clm08k clm08k gave you alot of great advise on care follow that info. They are not hard to care for and will eat just about anything food wise.
