I would have pictures, but the little guy dug straight into the sand right away. My ZZ has never dug into the sand, he's always been out and about swimming the tank.

So think I got lucky with my ZZ because he's never hidden at all? Thinking this hiding behavior is normal for peacocks, hope to see the little guy in the next week or so tho.

As far as behavioral issues go, should these two work in a 6' tank? I know I should have asked prior to buying, but I always have spare tanks to put fishes that don't work out in the big tank.

Haven't seen this guy since the day I put him into the tank. He dug in right away, but I could still see his head/tail. The last two days I haven't been able to see anything from this lil guy.

All the while my ZZ Eel swims the length of the tank and begs for more blood worms.

Since no one else is responding, I'll share my experience with zig-zag eels. Ours were actually sold to us as tire track eels, but due to the fact they seem to have topped out at 8", I believe they are actually ZZs.

The day they went into the tank, they buried in our fine silica sand immediately, and ever since, come out only at dusk to feed. Usually you can see the tips of their tails and their nose above the sand. On occasion they randomly surface and splash around for a bit in the night.

They eat only live black worms and the occasional very active earthworm. Frozen bloodworms, and everything else is ignored. To answer your question, I have seen them both in a 4 foot tank at the lfs for several months with no issues. In my opinion, yours should be fine. Best of luck!

i also have a 6' tank and i put two peacock eels in and they did the same thing. that was in February they still hide like that today. you can see them if you turn the light on late at night or early in the morning. i think they are light sensitive. i leave my light on over night sometimes and they won't come out as far as i know. this is just what i think

No, they don't. ZZ's stay small, smaller then Peacocks.

So you didn't bother with the link then.... Fishbase is notorious for erring on the monstrous, but please not the length: 90cm. That's just shy of 3'. Photos will more or less corroborate, certainly beyond 8".

There is a half-banded eel (wrong name, sorry- a dark blotching/pattern only on the top half) that is sometimes sold as zigzag, but it's a very different animal. And yes, it is little.

So many sites have been getting the TT and ZZ mistaken for eachother and backwards. A monster ZZ is 12".

Btw TT = tire track that does get that length. The zig zag stays under a foot.

You're suggesting that Fishbase is mistaken? Click the link and check the photos. Those arm-long specimens look a lot like zig-zag eels.

Re. digging/hiding: try it like loaches: put in some "dither" fish and maybe change up the decoration a little to see what makes him comfortable.
