New Peacock Eel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine never shows himself to even give him a treat! He completely burrows under the sand, can't even see a head or a tail.

Thought he might be MIA but installed a 3D background tonight and I disturbed/found him. But now he's right back under the sand with no indication of where he is in the tank.

That is no fun. Does he have caves and PVC pipes that he can swim in and around? You will need to try different setups with different size pipes mine seems to like the 1" pipe better than the 1 1/2" or 2" he also likes the rock caves that I made for him. Keep making your fish tank a happy place for him and he will come out.

i had a peacock and it did this constantly. only every once in awhile it would let me see it, but it always dug and stayed under the gravel.

1. more hide spots, more hide spots, more hidespots... this works for any species of spiney eel. and food association with it's owner. They are shy until they reconize you are not a threat.

2. dither fish make these fish more reclusive. and particularly be wary of fin nippers and aggressive behavior if you do try this route as most common dither-fish are semi-aggressive in nature.

3. any aggressive tank-mates will send a new/young spiney eel into seclusion. the bigger and older they get generally the more out-going they get.

I have yet to own a spiney I couldn't "tame". They can be alot like a skittish dog or cat. take that lil' bit of effort to make them feel safe. and they'll be begging at the tank-top before long for food.

I haven't seen my Peacock since I got him/her, my Zig Zag eel though I see on a daily basis. I have no idea how the Peacock is getting food or if it's still even in the tank (as I know these guys can be escape artists). There are plenty of hiding spots in my tank and my Zig Zag goes into his/her place every night around 9pm. It's kind of funny actually, it's like s/he is going to bed.
