No wont grow any faster for snakes its all about the food and corn snake is a perfect start my lil bro has 1 he's great only a bit of an escape artist ha got out once and found him 2 weeks later lol he was fine just a little skinny!!easy to take care of only fed once every 5 days on frozen mice we have him sine hatched and is now 2ft+ lovely colours ill post sum pics tomorow for you but deffo the perfect starter never once tried to bite or strike very tame corn's are

Hey if I start off with a 20g for a baby would it be alright? Or too big?

Yeah thats perfect bit of room for him my brothers loves his cave you should deffo get one after he eats he hides in there till digested then back out to look for another way out lol make sure you tape any holes or gaps where wires come out escape artist lol

I second the cornsnake notion. If you get a baby I'd definitely stick to a 10 gallon then upgrade it later. Too much room could potentially stress it unless you provide plenty of hiding spots and ground cover.

Ball pythons are another good choice but they tend to be lazier.

If you it doesn't have to be a snake look into crested geckos. They are really easy to care for and are very docile and sociable with a little effort put into that. They are also arboreal which means they need more height than width. So a tall enclosure may fit perfectly in the confines of your limited space.

Well I can spend extra on hides for the 20 and the gecko idea is cool ill probably get one in the future.

I wouldnt really worry about that get a big cave and a small one even!!this lil guy is very active always has since he was a baby now gettin bigger he is great holes every where through the ash bedding lol does be so funny head out one hole tail out the other ha and geckos my little sister has 2 leopard geckos their great but not as active as Zeus ha thats his name lol

Looking into getting a green tree boa myself .. Seen an amazonian tree boa in my local pet shop not as nice as others ive seen but its first ive seen in Ireland for sale going to keep looking
