Well, I have been trying to figure out if its a suchus or a yarrelli...or possibly even a rutilus. The pattern has much more contrast than most yarrellis I have seen (light areas are lighter and have almost an orange/yellow color). Suchus has ridges (sounds like Ruffles potato chips!) in front of and behind the adipose fin (between the dorsal fin and tail). I don't see these ridges on my juvenile specimen, but those features could become more obvious as the animal matures and grows larger. Rutilus has a very restricted range in two river basins in Laos and the Red River basin in Vietnam and China. So I would think the chances of it being rutilus is less based on that (obviously it could easily be that species, but the fact that yarrelli has a MUCH more extensive range makes it more probable that it is in fact yarrelli). Rutilus does not have the ridges around the adipose fin as suchus does (neither does yarrelli) so I would conclude that it is either yarrelli or rutilus. My personal opinion is that it is an unusual variant of yarrelli collected from a different locality than what is usually seen in collections. But I could EASILY be wrong...many of the people that have commented on this thread probably have far more experience in working with this genus. It does look quite different from many of the yarrelli photos on this site.
By now y'all are probably all so bored to tears by my rambling post that there will never be a follow up to this!! Thanks by the way for the compliments and comments
about my fish....it really makes this hobby fascinating and encouraging! Oh, to answer Nishant Datta's question on the goonch's aggression...no problems at all ....yet.
