picked up some new cichlids for my 120, I wanted something that will grow a little quicker and add some nice interesting color.

what do you guys think?

thanks guys, they had 3 different tank of synspila. Larger ones around 4" that were mostly dark and not really fading to their adult coloration. Some smaller ones that were a little better and cheaper because of their size.

and then some unmarked tank with these guys in, I actually paid a tiny bit more than the 4" ones for the color. They said that the fish in that tank were from a better source and so higher grade, which was kinda obvious by the color.

do you think that means they are a type variant ?

I've missed keeping a vieja/paratheraps specie they can change color at the drop of a hat if something annoys them, they have great character lol
 
I'm not SURE about this....but, with Syns....there's a "Belize" variant, which is what you have it looks like. I have 2 of those, too. And then there's the other Synspilums that look more like Melanurus--darker gold body, darker red head, little different body shape.

I think the Belize variant is very light gold body, light pink around the head, and a more round body shape--kinda like a football....
 
Nice pick ups. Have fun watching the Syn grow. Mine grew 7" in 6 months time. They get huge, and do so in a hurry.

tanks for the kind words guys, I haven't been in the ca cichlid subforum in a long time and it seems to be a lot friendlier than I remember.
the other ones at the store had the melanarus type coloration for sure, I was tempted to pick one up for comparison but I didn't want two huge fish lol.

ragin Cajun any chance you could show me some pics of your Belize syns? My fish has a mostly golden coloration like you say and I noticed its different to a lot of pictures of young syns
 
no reason not to be friendly and discuss. :) you want to abuse something make a burger. lots to be learned from folks. lots of help to be had from folks least that's my take.
 
out of curiosity ragin Cajun how do you know of moosehead ?? sorry for going off topic !
