Looks like we have a winner! The fish in my pics definitely looks a lot like the ones that come up when I search that name.

How common are these guys? I've never seen one here in town before (never seen one before to be honest, but its not like I've ever looked for them).

Not too common. The only person I can think of off hand who owns some is Cavamart. He's a member here, and has some babies for sale on aquabid.

That is an awesome pick up. I really like +++

That does indeed look like an adult male Chet. I wonder who traded it in to LFS and why though. These are extremely rare. I have a few pairs as does cavamart. Sent a few groups of fry to other folks on here and cavamart has sold several as well so they should start becoming more available soon.

:irked: Figures. I just came home from work to find him beat to hell and dead on the bottom of the tank.

I think someone who either works there or comes there often brought it in. No one there knew what is was, so they sold it to me for $10. I'll have to look them up on aquabid and see if I can get a few more, because he was gorgeous.

Damn it! It seems like anytime I find a rare, awesome fish, they get beat to death within 48 hours. But any run of the mill, find it in any LFS in the country, and it flourishes in my tanks :irked:.

That sucks man. Sorry for you loss. I have a group of fry from JD Gentry. I had one that died shortly after I got them and the other three are growing (slowly). Based on size I think I have a female and two males. The males are probably around 2.5 inches now. They haven't started to show much color yet. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can get a pair out of them.

They grow really slowly and you won't see much color until they get to breeding size. The are easy to sex once ,ature. Yours should be breeding within 4-6 months. If for some reason you don"t get a pair let me know. I have a couple of batches very slowly growing out:).

Thanks and good luck with your group.

Are you selling them? If so, could you pm me pricing and shipping information to 40204?

I blew the pictures up 4x, and one can see in the third picture, as well as the reflection in the glass in the first picture, that the fish in question clearly has the mouth/snout of a Paraneetroplus species. That would be one seriously deformed mouth for a Cryptoheros species:ROFL: Plus the body shape, markings and coloration are consistent with Paraneetroplus bulleri.

While a line from eye to mouth is a trait often exhibited by C. spilirus/cutteri, it is also a trait that is often present in many CA cichlids, but not exhibited except under fright. Seeing that the fish is in shallow water, when the picture was taken, it may very well be in a scared mode.

C. chetemulensis may or may not be in the hobby yet ----not too sure.
With out knowing the collection point with certainty, it's difficult to say wether or not a fish is actually C. chetemulensis or a regional variant of C. spilirum/cutteri. There are a few different C. spilirum/cutteri fish in the trade, that are being called C. chetemulensis ---of course all these fish can't be C.chetemulensis as they are clearly different strains. As shown in this link, (there are others also, I have seen in other threads). http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4996

Though, this has little to do with Paraneetroplus.
