I stumbled across this guy and decided to take the plunge. He will help break in my new tank later this week......i was at a not-so-local LFS and they had him in a large mixed tank with silver aros and FH and a 12" tiginus cat...Paid a pretty penny but no shipping!! Hydrolyus Tatauid....Red Tailed Papara.....about 7.5 inches.. what do think??

neat pickup, just be weary as Tats seem to have major issues when shedding the teeth, at least that is what i have heard anyway :)
what kind of issues??

Well, Tats seem to be the most sensitive and rather unstable of the Payara. Some do not make it past the stage where shedding and replacement of the fangs takes place. They become highly unstable and then just seem to die. Again, this is what I have heard and seen, but I have never owned one before.

Ummm....This one was at the LFS for three months....At what size does this shedding occur?

Not really sure on that one, again....this is just for some of that species, not all. I am sure that there are people who have never had a problem with them. I just know that that they are not the worst though as I remember. I think that Scombs are the worst for fatality rate among Payara. You should be fine man, did not mean to get you all worried over a plausible event lol.

Scombs are the sensitive ones. Tats are quite hardy. I have had two for a few years now with no issues. I am pretty sure the tooth shedding is down to damage rather than any regular even't. I have never seen mine shed.

I do not do live food. Has anyone swithed tat's to pellets? I already feed frozen silversides and krill.....

Nice pick up!! I had 3 9-10" Tats a few years back w/no issues on the tooth topic.
They were pretty hardy fish in my set up :D
