Went to the LFS today and this little fella ended up coming home with me:

Been after one for ages and I think it's a male, anyone confirm this?

I'll get some better pics later.

Yep, Id guess Mayan Cichlid (Cichlasoma urophthalmus) from that angle as well..and theres no defining characteristics in sexing them. Venting is the only way to tell. i had a pair and could never tell them apart until the female layed eggs.

I own Mayans, I say Mayan...look at the caudal Eye. Festae will have smaller caudal Eye.

Here is a better pic (if you can see through all the scratches )

He was sold to me as a Festae so I am a bit disappointed as we never see them around here but he has bags of character and is throwing his weight around with fish much larger than himself already.

Most pics of adult Mayans I have seen don't look as colourful, is he going to look more washed out as he gets older?

I better start reading up on Mayans then. Do you think he would do better with Oscars or a Jag when he matures?

Mayan, no doubt. Y-bar comes down to gill area and does not join with adjacent bar...unlike festae , in which the y-bar typically joins at around eye level. Tail spot...very typical mayan. Just a couple of it's many traits that say mayan. Very nice looking specimen though....I'd definately keep it.

Definitely a Mayan and a very nice one at that. I really like the deep reds on the fins. I've kept Mayans before and their temperaments can differ. I've had some really aggressive ones and I've had some pretty mellow ones. They are capable of taking care of themselves against most rough tankmates. You'll just have to see how yours acts with other large cichlids.

Thanks for the help and advice everyone! :headbang2

I just wonder if they knew if it was a Mayan at the LFS when they sold it me now.
