Hopefully it was a mistake on their part and not a blatant lie. Mayans and Festae are confused by many people. But after you have seen both species enough they become very easy to differentiate. You may want to speak to the LFS about it. It is a nice Mayan though if you decide to keep it.
 
Thanks, I'm setting up a 3rd tank soon so I will keep him and fit him in somewhere. He's currently in the Oscar tank but I have had to use a divider for now because he is borderline snack size at the moment!
 
People will always do it for the Money, even if they knew it was the wrong item or value. Most of the time it was sold to them as such so they'll sell it back to the public that way. Dog Eat Dog world out there.
 
lFS usual just sell them as red terrors and have no idea what a Mayan is lol... Very nice, I wish I could find one near me
 
happens alot in the Albany, NY area. Happened to me once, then i bought a mayan that turned out to be a festae. Mayans are a very cool and pretty fish so dont take anything away from them but its not a festae which is the real prize when you find one. I have 5 lil ones right now
