new pike not eatting!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its quite common for Crenicichla to be stubborn at first to eat foods, especially prepared foods like pellets. Give it time, it'll come around in the end. ;)

Frozen mysis shrimp is probably the best way to go right now. Get the Piscine Energetics brand, as its QUITE nice. :) Alternate between frozen bloodworms, mysis, and frozen krill. Either feed them seperate, or all at the same time. Mix them ocassionaly with the pellets as well.

Are there any other fish in there with it? Sometimes pikes 'learn' to eat certain foods by watching other fish eat them as well.

I wouldn't flip out too much, many of us have had pikes not eat for several weeks with no problems. Besides, Crenicichla lucius is one of the easier species to get to eat. ;) I had mine on flake, pellets, and frozen.

I had to feed my Lenticulata pike feeder fish when I first got them. Now I am slowly feeding them less feeders and they are eating frozen and starting to eat NLS pellets. Now I just feed them pellets and frozen. Every couple weeks I drop in 100 feeders as it's a 450 gallon tank and 100 feeders last about 30 seconds with all the other preds in the tank. They sure pack on the size with the feeders! When I first got them they wouldn't eat anything but feeders as they are wild caught! Your pike will come around it just takes time and patience.

Ive been trying to get my pikes to eat pellets for months now, and I have yet to see them eat a single pellet. I feed mine freeze dried shrimp, nightcrawlers, market shrimp, and they also like to eat cichlid crisp. So its a mystery to me also.

true iv had a pike and never got him 2 ever eat chiclid gold or hikari gold he was always eating market shrimp and brine shrimp when he was little i tryed weaningf him to freeze dried food but he seemed to have an intrest for movement

Personally, I think frozen krill is better than FD krill. Don't know why, but my fish hit it better.

Hikari Carnivore and Hikari Massivore are both great pellets to use. I know of several people that have their Crenicichla on those two types of pellets.

mine would "accidentally" take some pellets and spit them out and wait for the FD krill. i've tried starving for a week or so but he would never take it. this time he finally broke and this past weekend started eating pellets, floating hakari cichlid pellets and sinking hakari cichlid and omega one shrimp pellets. it may take a while but it'll come around

i saw my wild punctata eating omega one flakes today :D i was surprised that it would take pellets/flakes at such a small size but i've heard wilds will be more willing to eat pellets
