Hey I just received a Sanchezi Piranha from aquascape, and it seems to have a bit of fin-rot. How should I go about curing this?

quarintine it, then give it some LIGHT medications. Hope that works

what do you mean by light medications? just a smaller dose?

did you get it mailorder?lot of times when shipped, fish can get slight ammonia or ph burns and its not actually fin rot

Yes I got it shipped overnight. It just looks like the fish is in bad shape, the fins are kinda fading away, and the bottom of the fish looks prickly(?), like it wasn't fed properly.

So I went to my lfs and bought some Melafix, which cures fin and tail rot. So hopefully he will get better if I dose for a week.

Any other suggestions?

Salt-

Make sure water is pristine...Should be good to go in a day or two.....

I will try this. Can I mix salt with Melafix?

Piranha's get fasted for a few days to minimize ammonia and other's....Not uncommon for them to come in alittle on the weaker/thinner side...Give it a few days and a nice varied diet and you should see a tremendous turnaround....

Water params will be key---With salt is all that should be needed

Yes-

But would only use the salt and water changes first-----Meds as last resort...

It' got to be ammonia that is causeing this-----Simple to cure....Just dont over think it-Give time for recovery then move to meds if nothing progresses...
