NEW planted tank planning

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don's use baffles, drip trays, or dividers. Just an empty glass tank :) Check out the link in my sig. All the info and pics you could ever want about my tank!

Wait are there no baffles in your sump?? You're just using submerged?

Are you running an external or internal return? Which would you suggest?

Awesome man, thanks for all the help btw, I think I might actually try to go sump now. I can see how the C02 wouldn't get released too much if there aren't like 10 little drops for the water to get oxygenated from.

Nope! No dividers, don't need them :) Using nothing but submerged media.

When you say internal/external return, you mean the pump? Internal would be the easiest to set up, less plumbing.

Wow awesome tank man! Sorry to hear about the trouble over the holidays.

So did you ever get the plumbing figured out so that it wouldn't flood the display in the event of a clog? How exactly does your plumbing work, I mean I read the whole thread but i'm still a bit confused. Where exactly is the durso standpipe, and what exactly is its purpose?

Would a ball valve work for regulating the flow of the drainpipe so that it "matches" the return uptake?

I've updated the plumbing since those posts. I've switched over to a real Herbie design, so there's no flooding issues. Before I only had one drain line, with a valve on it. I was able to make it quiet, but I ran the risk of flooding the tank if something clogged the line.

Since then I took out the return from the overflow box and added a vertical standpipe, like in the real Herbie design, then put returns over the sides of the tank. No it's 100% flood proof.

Woooooaaahhh!!!! 6 bulbs of T5HO? Blow the whistle, flag on the play! That is serious overkill on the lighting. 2 bulbs will be high light. On a tank as shallow as 14", even 1 bulb will give you high light.

I couldn't have said it or illustrated it ANY BETTER.
