New Pond idea

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks. I haven't plotted the actual pond yet, the measurements on the first page are just the boundaries, but since it isn't a really big plot of land, i'm guessing maybe only like 150 gallons maybe (probably less), but the fish that are going in it aren't that big lol (mosquito fish). I was thinking of koi, but they are too nice for my pond. and they require a depth of at least 3x their length, which is too deep for me to dig =) i get tired around 2'. Plus, I enjoy fishing and with mosquito fish, I could just toss in a line and they'll start biting. It's like mini fishing lol.

Instead of liner have you thought of the preformed livestock trough? Wont have that nice shape you are going for but would be easy, and sturdy.

Just wanted to toss that in..

Cant wait to see what you do here.

Yeah, i would truly rather use a preformed pond, but they get so expensive past 80 gallons, and i'd really like something at least 100 gallons. But if i do find one relatively cheap, it will definitely become an option. I've been checking ebay and craigslist routinely, but so far nothing close by and cheap has popped up. but i do have till spring/summer break so i've got a few months to get together the supplies before i start.

Looks good but what I would do is grab a heater (for winter) and stock in with guppies:headbang2 preferably fancy. I might just be :screwy: but I LOVE fancy tail guppies:banhim:. And if you want you could breed them in there to if you want just dont go over board with the initial adult stocking so theres room for the fry to live.

yeah thanks for bringing this up again, the issue of stocking. At first I thought i'd go with something easy that are hardy and prolific in all conditions, the infamous mosquito fish. but now that i'm doing my research, it appears that at 2 feet in depth, the temperature will be stable enough for most fish. I was thinking central american cichlids, maybe convicts or cutteri, something easy that will breed and don't need excessive special care other than regular feeding. I was also thinking of just some monster fish if it is big enough, maybe an oscar, or pair of jack dempsey, or some good sized catfish. Any suggestions?

And yes, I do plan to install a heater, but it will be set at like 65 degrees F so that it is not in constant use. What i'm worried about is it getting too hot during the summer days. My planned method right now is doing large water changes of 25% with cooler water, buffering the heat. What do you think of that?
