I think (maybe some one like pufferpunk can correct if needed) it is the color of the sand, last one i had was lighter but was on light sand not black.

Thanks.... He is about 1.5 inches or so, Just a little guy but he has already shown a mean streak i had to remove a 6 inch pleco he was trying to eat.

Just an update.... Doing great eating like a pig and color is coming along nice... These are the coolest fish ever.

I believe too that the colors of the sand affect the color of the fahaka to blend in. After all they are lurkers, mine is in a river sand that is color grey, blended his colors to the sand.
