So...it's not banning you from buying or owning these snakes? I have yet to see any sort of border patrol for state borders...just saying.

Seems like they are only targeting the really huge snakes too (half were anacondas). I know there are plenty of responsible pet owners out there, but this video really doesn't mention any points for the opposing side (except the Everglades), which makes me VERY skeptical.

I know someone that rescues and sells huge snakes, like anacondas and 18' pythons. Just throwing it out there that nobody is going to have their snake euthanized if they move out of the state.

Personally I am ambivalent on this subject because I feel that there is a general lack of information about the bill's purpose...and that the opposition is EXTREMELY biased.

Lets please try to save these comments, though respected, to this thread, thanks everyone.

I just think its all spread around which is good in a way, but the bigger comments like this and such are already going on in the above link. Thanks again

Very well, but it should be noted that you gave no indication that skeptical points of view were restricted. The thread you recommended is specifically asking for one side of the argument...under which my post did not fall.

Most people are not against having restrictions against owning these snakes but they should be reasonable. For example, Florida requires permits that will not be issued unless there is proper caging and the person has a good knowledge of the large snake in question and it is micro-chipped. This way they can be reasonably sure that the snake will not be released and it will not harm anyone. The problem with this bill is that it will not do anything to help the problem in the everglades and if they are having trouble enforcing the laws that are already in place it does not make sense that they think that they will be able to enforce even stricter laws.

I am all for reasonable limitation but down right banning them from transport is not the answer that anyone is looking for. I imagine that if people had to move to a different state that instead of having them euthanized they would let them go which would worsen the invasion problem.

This is politicians pretending to do their job. This ridiculous law will do nothing and nobody will get in trouble for crossing state lines with a boa or python, how would anyone know?

With all that said, the pet hobby is to blame for this more than anyone. It is completely irresponsible and needless to breed big constrictors. There is no need to breed common Burms, Retics, Rocks, Anacondas, or even Red Tails. 99% of these animals go to people who have no idea what they are in for. It takes a lot of know how and even more space and money to keep a large constrictor. The average snake buyer has NO IDEA what they are getting into when they but these cute little babies. Properly cared for, a Retic or Burm will be 6+ feet after 2 years and too big and dangerous for the average person. In my area Zoo's and animal rescues are overwhelmed with the number of large snakes people are trying to unload. They wont even take them anymore. I can get half a dozen free large constrictors tomorrow if I wanted to. Until the pet trade and breeders stop the irresponsible breeding and sales practices of these animals, nothing will change. For christs sake, the Petco near me sells baby red tails and Albino Burms, I guarantee the type of buyer that would buy a snake at Petco has no idea what they are in for.

Breeders CAN NOT keep breeding these animals and selling them to just anyone, its IRRESPONSIBLE!!!!
