I have to say, I find it odd.

I have no covers on any of my plec tanks.

Of course, if there are other fish in the tanks even little ones, I cover the tanks since even Tetras can be startling to a "sleeping" plec.

But most of my plec tanks have no covers since they are plec specific.

...and I've never lost one...

I broke my glass tops on accident and had 4 fish jump out in one week. Now there is a screen panel from my back yard and its temporary til I get a new one.
