So I picked up this fish the other day thinking it was some sort of Silver TSN variant... It was merely labeled "Shovelmouth Catfish". I got home and after a little searching I figure out that I have just gotten a Sperata Aor - Indian Shovelnose.

I searched the forums and it looks like only one or two people have ever had one here. Anyone else have one? How big is it? How long did it take to reach said size?

Mine is about 2-3" right now and ate some pieces of shrimp last night.

I'll add some pics when I get home.

This is an image I got from Google if anyone is curious what they look like.

Planet Catfish and Wiki claim 71" max length, as in 1" shy of 6'... I am guessing it's like an RTC though where it will hit around 1.5-2' in a year or so then slow drastically. We'll see I guess, there really isn't much info about this fish at all...

They're care is much like that of TSN'S but they are quite aggressive to their own kind. They also prefer dim lighting as opposed to normal aquarium light

Can tolerate around 6.0-7.0 ph so maybe a just a tad lower than most fish

nice fish man keep us posted

Thanks all. :)

Here are a couple pics. In the 50g sump of my 200g for now. It has no light and he is to small to go in either tank. Easier to feed small amounts to as well.

i haven't kept one but know several people who have they are ranked a close 2nd to wykii in terms of aggression so will be one to a tank once it reaches a few inches long.
they make stunning fish and you can expect about 30in in a good size tank (8x3x2 or larger) but most often as is the case for most big predatory fish people cant cope with them over about 24in.
Good luck with it and keep us posted as it is a species i have often considered.
oh yes -i just remembered it is apparently possible to get them onto jmc pellets.

Thanks for the info. :)

A couple pics of after having a couple tiny pieces of shrimp. Don't mind the mess at the bottom of the sump. I put a couple different kinds of pellets in last night and he wasn't interested, plus it's a sump. So it isn't super clean in the first place. :grinno:

always wanted one, but could never find one. They get massive. I had some pics of some absolute monsters. Good luck. I'd recommend 1000+ gals for life.
