We're aware wimple is a piranha.they're NOT wimples, they're just stunted rbp.if they were wimples they woulda been here with me 5months ago.

You do know that you don't have to bring home every piranha you see right? Save some for the rest of the world. I can't blame you though, a half dozen wimples would be awesome imo.

i think what happened is the lfs barely fed them, or fed them enough so they dont go belly up because #1 it cost money to feed #2 big fish are harder to sell and #3 when fish are hungry it makes them appear more lively when people approach the tank

I'm gonna agree that they just haven't been cared for properly. I've seen rbps stay the size of a nickel for months and grow to 3-4" (plus get some color finally!) in less than 2 months with proper care.
Around here P's sell because they'll viciously attack a goldfish and that's it. When I took over the fish room at a LFS I switched them onto prepared and frozen foods with live insects/worms. They grow like weeds but they don't sell often because I won't throw a goldfish in there to show how "dangerous" they are. :screwy:
Even with three 7-10" rbps all anyone wanted to see was them attack fish. When I occasionally gave them convicts it killed sales because people were disappointed that they hunted rather than frenzy and crash into glass to catch them.

How dare you disprove the public image of piranhas! lol, honestly though, sucks for your sales but good that THOSE people didn't buy them since they'd just be disappointed anyways. Less chance of them being released.

I would have to concur with poor water quality and nourishment. Baby piranhas like all baby animals require lots of feedings during their early years for proper development and growth. Piranhas also release a growth inhibiting pheromone. It’s instinctive to them. Most people agree it’s for when the dry season comes, they won’t have growth spurts and even more die in shallow pools of water.

So to properly grow a baby piranha a good scheduled feeding and water change schedule is the best. I have seen baby piranhas in my local pet stores that were raised in such poor water quality they had gill curl.

I would not recommend purchasing them and trying to breed them. A good diet and optimum water quality may actually trigger spawning in captivity. But, there are very few breeders of reds that are successful in introducing wild stock to replenish the gene pool.

In the wild runts, weak and sick piranhas are killed of by their brotherin and sister to assure only the best genetics are allowed to reach adulthood and reproduce. To breed this fish would most likely add to the poor gene pool red belly breeders are dealing with now.

If anything I would consider these fish rescue fish, and should be purchase to grow and enjoy their activity in captivity.

I guess this is just free press for that pet store because nobody here is seriously considering buying them. He's just shocked at their growth rate since he breeds them himself and has seen their growth rate from egg to juvis time and time again.

Wussup serra haven't seen you in these parts before. Lol welcome!I 100% agree these fish shouldn't breed!I'm shocked that the old man did this to them,I know he feeds just enough, you walk by his baby angel tank n they act like they gonna eat you!I would like to find someone that would truely care for & enjoy them, hell I'd even buy em for the person.
