New Ray tank arrived today

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 24/7 change via HMA system ( Doesn't look quite as fancy as T1's) but it works good :) I leave mine trickling into the tank all day and have had no issues with heating it at all. I have one heater in the tank coverd up by pipe so ray dont burn itsself and 2 in the sump.
The flow on my HMA filter can be turned up to a supposed 4/5 litres a minute if i remember correctly. Cartridges need replacing every 20000galon at a cost of about £40 , i change about 100 galon a day minimum so they'll last a wile. Best thing is i dont have to worry about tank maintence, the ray moves the crap off the bottom of the tank, either the external filter or the sump cleans the crap.
Brialliant really best thing i have in fish keeping

Thanks for all of the info.

Couple of questions - 100 gals per day seems a lot, how much does the tank hold in gals?

What determines how much you flow through in terms of water parameters. i.e. do you change this amount to keep the Nitrate low or PH high or is it just what you feel you want to do?

Where does your overflow out of the tank come from, high point in tank or sump?

i turn over just over 10% of the tank 1000 gal tank then a 140 gal sump

i have a flow meter on my hose in to the HMA cheap on ebay £20

it keeps the nitrates low 5 ppm in my tank now in my old tank they were never lower than 150 ppm with 2 x 25% water changes per week with no problems but this new tank i wanted to try to keep them low

to make it work right you need to have the overflow on the sump then pump the water into the main tank

Thanks for the info....I assume this is 10% per day?

I much prefer 5ppm than 150, I bet they appreciate it and eat more, grow more and live longer.

Based on the amount on large fish in your tank I think 5ppm is something to be proud of and shout about.

I thought London water has about 20-30 ppm nitrate straight out the tap?

Mine has.

not mine north London must have better water :D

i used lots of diffrent stuff on the old tank to try to bring the nitrates down from a schuran nitrate reactor to diffrent resins nothing worked that well

even at 150 ppm the rays done great and bred 3 times and i also grew new born pups to adult size

its getting the Ph stable that was the problem the water comes out of the tap at 8.14 this was not a problem in the old tank as the 2 water changes per week buffed the tank water which would drop to 6 if i didnt do changes for one week

now 150 gal per day pumps in and the ph stays at 7.5

now all i do is feed and rake the sand over every now and then to make sure i dont have any dead spots

All I'm saying is even if it comes out at 0ppm that it is an amazing. Achievement keeping it at 5ppm with just over 10% call it 15 % daily changes.
I have done 15-20% daily drip and mine is never below 80ppm.

My tanks is not as big as yours only 530 UK gallons which is about 680 us gallons, even at 40ppm out the tap mine is quite a big increase.

My stocking is only 2 leopoldi a polypterus and a flowerhorn.

Most be something taking the nitrates out of your tank.

Also high p.h. means high carbonate''s which means high tds which is most likely high nitrates especially Thames water.
