A friend gave me this Motoro and I added him to my tank. He was doing great and eating about 3 or so hours ago. Now he is freaking out. When he swam up the side of the glass I noticed he has devloped a large red spot on his underside. It is blood red. What could have caused that?

ammonia burn? what are his tankmates? could be alot of reasons, what kind of substrate? sharp decorations? ..............got a good friend there by the way!

Yah we will need more info

Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
PH

Tank size
Filtration
how long it has been setup
substrate
tankmates

Should be a good start as those are the most likely causes

pH 7
ammonia 0 (i dont know how the bag was)
nitrates/nitrites below detectable limit of test kit (liquid api kind)
barebottom
sump/bioball tower
125 gallon setup 6 months
1 other motoro (female) handfull of green tefe discus (again he gave me these)

a very good friend indeed, he's getting out and wanted to let things go where they'd be looked after.

Some pics. He has stopped frantically swimming and ramming the glass. I added a emorer 350 to help keep water good.

Those results concern me please make sure you shook the nitrate test well enough.

What is the water change schedule on the tank? Or is it s drip?

I would think ammonia could be the problem here if your testing 0 Nitrates the cylce may have been stopped

Also how big is the other motoro and is there any sign of stress among the other fish?

Try and get a pic of the spot in question if possible without harrassing the ray

I have taken tank water to school and more recently to work. Nitrates are present just very low. Latest work test (using Ion Chromatograph) came out to less than .001 ppm. I change a lot of water and I only use DI water. Not to mention the bioball tower is very effective.

I see a little pink in the video and a belly spot but don't see the red spot really, maybe I am missing it?

If the water really is fine the only other thing I can think of is maybe the other ray stung him?

I would just monitor the water closely and make sure he eats well tomorrow. You may just be overly concerned because he is new.

Good luck either way and please keep us updated on how he does tomorrow

He is a good looking little ray by the way, very nice pick up
