New rays not eating?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i'd take miles advice, and check to see if there is anything wrong with the ray, rather than seeing if its just a picky eater.

I agree with miles too. Check the tail if there's an infection. Check your water parameters, just incase.

Water params are good, I have been feeding my motoro enough for 2 rays his size for about a month so that there would not be so much strain on the bioload. The only ray that came in thin is the guyana ray. I can see pelvic bones and a dent in his head. PH is 6.7 Nitrates are around 10 or 15 right now. No ammonia or nitirite. Temp is 82

Good news, the reticula and the histrix are happly chasing ghost shrimp around the tank and (although they dont like it as much) eating grocery store shrimp and squid. I will try live black worms for the guyana though.

None have a pink belly or any signs of anything abnormal on the tail.

I use small rounded black gravel for a substrate. My motoro hasnt had a problem with it and it has no sharp points or anything.

i was told that you should only use sand or a bare bottom tank for rays.. i could be wrong though.....

im glad your 2 rays are eating:thumbsup:

I got black worms and put them in the tank and all 3 new rays went nuts and started eating them and my motoro didnt know what was going on and swam to the other side of the tank but them came back when he realized there was food, lol :D :D :D :D :D

Sounds like a great update!

My guess is that the smaller rays were only fed small portions of blackworms or red worms before you got them. Try whole earthworms and see if they will take those, as they are nutritious but a little less expensive. Power-feed the skinny rays as much as possible when they are young, and combat that with extra-water changes :) Once you get them filling their guts on shrimp, you're in the clear!
