I just got a Red Devil about 3" yesterday afternoon for my 75gal. Do they sulk like an oscar for a few days before they start to come out of there shell and start to eat? I had a molly in there that i think i over looked couse i seen it this morning floating with its fins gone and eyes plucked out. So im guess the red ate a little last night.:naughty: Anyway, i have some sinking pellets to feed it and some pellets that float. About how long should i go before worring if he is going to eat or not?

he should eat with in the first few days. he will be fine without eating for 3-4weeks but thats obviously not ideal...

3-4 weeks?? Are you serious, never knew they could survive that long without food, can humans even survive that long without food and they can store fat alot easier than fish for obvious reasons?!?

Just give the RD some time. Based on experience, let the RD settle in and the RD will eventually get use to you feeding him. Do you have any other fish with the RD...maybe some dither fishes? I found it helps if they see other fish going after the food.

3-4 weeks might be a bit excessive....he should be eating after a few days or up to a week. after that I might start to get concerned. It generally will take a few days though. it's not often that you receive a fish that will eat only minutes after being introduced to a new tank. I've had it happen before, but not very often.

I agree. I also find it helpful if you tempt them with forzen blood worms. It'll help get them used to feeding. Then once they are successfully eating you can get them to take pellets.

K thanks for the help, i would think 2 to 3 weeks would be not good. Anyway, he/she is in a 75 with a pleco for now. We will have to see how that goes. I have had an oscar for a few years in a 125gal but traded him in on some brackesh fish. Than went back to fresh and got a dovii. BUT was going to use the 125 for a grow out tank and get a larger one later but money stopped it. SO, i had to give up my dovii for a better future. Now im down to a 75, and was looking for a single fish mabey two.
Again thanks for the help
Oh i also have a sand bottom, im taking that it will be ok?

I have starved my a picky eater when changing brands of food.
They will eat when hungry, but dont keep throwing food to entice them if already rejecting it.
Just try again the next day.

Sand is always fine with cichlids.

friends CK didn't eat for 21 days
