yea, sand is fine. My RD likes to move it around at least 8 hours a day. If he doesnt start taking the pellets within a week i would try some blood worms. Im thinking that he might not be used to that large of tank and has no clue where to find food.

Glad he came around. it may be too small to tell at 3", but venting is usually the only way to tell with juvinile RD.
