New Red Texas Pix

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Apologies for dragging this on, but just to update I have come to the conclusion that the animal guy is indeed right, supported by opinions of various others, incl. a Thai breeder on FB.

Kamfa Flowerhorn.jpg

Hopefully he'll be this red some day :) I also found out that local breeders say it can be more challenging and take more specific grooming to get a male Kamfa's kok to get very big -- not so automatic, like say a ZZ, so that could account for it being not so big now.

Thx all for input, the 'mystery' is basically solved (though I'm still not 100% sure it's a male or female), but I think male because no black markings on dorsal fin.

Well maybe it's obvious to experienced pros like you and the animal guy, but looking at fisheatfish's pic, plus the link I provided to a genuine Thai Red Texas hybrid, to the layman it's obviously not so obvious :)

I think that anyone that is familiar with kamfa, can clearly see that the strain dominates that fish. It might have some "texas" buried in it's genes, but it's not an RT. At least now you know what you bought.

Sure, now I can see the sense of your assessment (as I've never had a Kamfa before) -- would you reckon it's a male or female?

Looks male to me, but sometimes looks can be deceiving. Need a clear pic of the vent and someone should be able to confirm sex for you.

Very nice pick up and price for him. I like the worms pearls on him. Zoom in on the first picture you post and it will show you it's a male (pointy genital=male).

Here is mine that looks like yours that I bought from a guy that imported it from Thailand. He is pushing 11inches and doesn't have a big head but is portioned to its body which I don't mind since I like a really pearly kamfas.

Btw, I wish I could change the title of this post, in hindsight it's kind of embarrassing o_O But Thx a lot for your further input RD, and LovinPhish too. Sure not easy getting pix of him (as when I approach the tank he always gets excited thinking he might get some vittles), this was the best I could get for now (if too many pix he starts getting skittish).

And yeah LovinPhish I saw his tube but thought females might have the same, appreciate your clarification. And like you I'm not super concerned about size of his kok, pearl affect is more important to me personally which is why I had to have this guy (and spend a decent amount of cash set up a brand new home for him) Drakaris Kamfa 10.jpg
