New retic ray with datnoides?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not saying dats will mess with a ray, but hey anything can happen. You would figure a dat will less likely mess with anything bigger than its self. and dats grow pretty big.

Nic you may be a well knowledgeable person, but I was only trying to shed some light on the situation.

shed light on what? simple thing here... if you know nothing its usuall better not to comment... having no experience with dats and rays how can you comment on them?

if a ray pins a dat once it never will again and dats could care less about a stingray... experience speaks more than talking out your azz..... and retics are perfect starter rays if you wanna put a little extra effort and tlc... but i would expect all you people to know that seeing as your talking from experience and not what other people say....

Dunno about the datnoids but from what ive seen, your 9" dat might be of some problems.
To me 40% wc a week seems a bit too little.
Id say barebottom, its easier to clean, stingrays crap A LOT.
Retic not really the best choice, motoro's are "hardier" and eat alot more agressively than retics.
You dont need RO water, use what comes out of your tap + prime.
Highly doubt retics were tank bred as it is non profitable, most likely WC.
It usually takes a long while for retics to be weaned on foods such as mussels, and prawns. If the retic is from an lfs, i wouldn't believe it unless they fed it with prawns or mussels in front of me.

Thanks for advice, much appreciated bro.
I did askthw sellor to do a food test, and he dropped in some bloodworm, and I watched the rays eat. After aclomatised, and in my tank for 4 hours, I fed some tetra prima sinking granules, and the new ray started eating to my surprise. Then I adeed a large portion of chopped prawn and muscle. Couldn't beleive it, ray started eating prawn. Hooray!
My only concern is the dats r so greedy, I reckok o'll have to do massive feeds
Each time like last night, just so food reaches the bottom of tank so say can eat it. All this food=more crap=poor water quality.
I have fx5 and 405 running simultaneously, do you think I have strong enough filtration for the new ray?
Shall I increas to two 50% WC per week?

I agree with the above, go with a motoro ray bro...Also watch the sizes of your dats because some rays can kill...

It's that monster Bryant! Hi r you fella! I've started to spell your name correctly recently!LOL.
Nice to see you cruisin' on the ray forum. This section is like another world for, having only really kept datnoides in the past, but am very grateful for advice given on thisthread.
I would love amotoro, but tank is to small. Even for retic ray, it is not big enough for long term. Hopefully after 12 months I will get a 36wide tank or spmeting like a 180 fallen.
I'm gonna keeps lights off for another 24 hours, willpowt some pics soon.

keep your water changes where they are... one 50% insteadd of a 40% might be better...

My 14" female motoro tried to cover my 6" ntt dat yesterday, had her in the corner wedged against the glass and a foam filter. She gave up after about half a minute and no harm to the dat. Hopefully, this won't happen again. I feed the rays twice a day so I don't think she was too hungry, maybe just being dominant.

My retic did the same thing lol

I agree with NIC my first ray was a retic. Got her at 4" and she is now about 8". :grinno: She is a very agressive eater she will take food away from my motoro. Just make sure you take care of your water. It did take a while to get her off of earth worms but she now loves market shrimp. Good luck rays are addicting one is never enough!!!

I cruise around here and there to learn and obtain information and because I have other fish with my dats as well. Well if the motoro gets two big you can sell it in the future, up to you :)

My ntt dat has been with my two motoro rays for over a year, no problem.

Well if nic says the dats are fine, then its probably fine. Seriously, all rays are good starters, its just that retics tend to be the most mistreated ones and usually come in half dead, which is definitely not something you would want as a first ray. Plus we rarely hear of motoros dying from not eating after being imported, so we were merely suggesting it might be a better idea to start off with a motoro.
