Over the rainbow
I recently purchased a 6 inch rhom piranha from shark aquarium and put him in a 55 gallon tank with 5 dither fish (exodons). hes been very skittish and every time i walk by he would swim really fast and bump his head on the wall. Every day i would offer him a silver side, because thats what the lady at shark aquarium said they fed him, but he has not taken it. So for 5 days he has not eaten. Also, two days ago i noticed slight fin rot and today it escaladed to the point where he almost doesn't have a lower fin and his other fins are starting to go also turning white at the tip. I did a 50% water change, i took out the plastic plants, cleaned out the entire filter, used meds for fin rot, and also used meds for amonia. I added a heater and took out the exodons. I'm supposing its from all the stress but is there anything else I can do? Or am i doing something wrong? Any advice would help. thanks! :nilly:

hope you didn't take out or clean bio media with tap water, that will throw the tank into new cycling again.
just keep water clean and follow the instruction for the meds you should be fine.
rhom can go without food for a long time so don't have to feed it while it's being medicated, it helps to keep the water clean too.
once its healed it will probably be hungry enough to eat the food you offer to it.

Great point... keep the water pristine as you medicate.

Eat or Die when he is cured.

Okay so i cleaned my entire filter but kept the same media. I did a quick rinse on the media but im hoping the good bacteria didn't die. The water parameters is all fine for now. I guess all there left to do is wait.

I have to ask, did you rinse it in fresh clean water from the sink? or did you rinse it in the smelly dirty fish tank water before the water change in a bucket?

I posted the same thread on piranha-fury and those guys are quick! I've realized it was most likely a ammonia spike and the best thing to do is small water changes througout the weak until the piranha is healed. I also realized the mistakes i made was rinsing out the filter (killing good bacteria), and keeping the tank at 70-72 temp while it shuld be at 76-78. Thanks for the posts ill keep you guys updated

Ah Ha!.... No worries, I did the same in the past.
As long as you learn from your mistakes.

it's like this thread and the thread below are going through similiar problems.
Possibly were all slacking off on tank maintenance because of all the other summer activities. I've found it really hard to keep up with cleaning the tank between moving and running off to play outside.

Ps: don't try and move tanks with a hangover. Makes for a very long and painful day.
