I wondered how long can a 13in Bk Rhom go w/o eating. I got him last week. He is in a 180g tank by himself. I tried to feed a large piece of shrimp to him that was dipped in garlic...but he doesn't seem interested. I treated the tank w/ praziquantal. the tank temp is 80F. Any suggestions?

it can go for weeks, sometimes months.
don't feed it for few more days the try with smelt or some fish fillet (white fish such as bass, tilapia, catfish, etc). I always found my p's love fish over shrimp.
once it get settled down and start eating good you can try with shrimp again if you want to feed shrimp.

post some pix of your rhom, love to see some monster rhom

rhoms some times go on a hunger strick. could be days, could be weeks, could be months but usually at large size.
just stop feeding it for a week and try to feed it something, if it doesn't eat take it out and try to feed again after few more days.
just make sure your water parameters are good and the rhom isn't sick or anything.

What temp is your tank set at?

Room temperature, in the water it is around 25 deg cal. But it is not that he is not eating at all. Its just that I take out the untouched chunk of fillet next day. However I am afraid that I might kill him if I keep him hungry for several days.

I just don't understand this fish yet, as he is slim unlike RBP. How can he survive days without eating. I have read that this spices have very strong enzyme to finish the food off. I wish if there is any sign to know he is hungry.

I like my Oscars better as when they are hungry, seeing me make them move fast and they beg for the food. Same goes for Arowana. Sometimes I think of selling this Monster.

feeding an individual piranha will never be as satisfying as feeding those begging cichlids that "act" like they want food weither they need it or not. DAmn things would eat themselves to death if you let them. unless you're into feeding your rhom live, a shoal is more fun to feed.

you've come to a realization that many people before you have, owning piranhas can be boring

Turning the light off for a few days might help your rhom adjust to the new tank as well. I wouldn't worry so much about the fish starve to death. I rescued a sick/skinny elongatus that wouldnt eat for weeks and now is doing well.
