how big of a tank does a royal pleco need??

Depends on the species. L-191 can go in a 75g. I wouldn't put any other species in a tank smaller than 180g.

Those are some stunning panaque you have there sayyid, look really good condition for new arrivals. Looks like you a have a good Loricariid collection too, post some shots, eh?

you could keep a royal in your 40 for quite a while since they are one of the slowest growing pleco's. once it gets bigger you'll need to get rid of it or upgrade.
