I set-up a 80 gallon 40-20-20 for a grow-out tank for a 4"Tiger Oscar, 4"Salvini,3"Convict, 3"Jewel and a 3"JD.... I have a 180 that will be ready in about 2 months but tonight i looked in my tank and i was shocked i have little babies that are being guarded by the salvini and convict. My question is is this a good mix and should i set-up a 29gal for the parents and fry or should i let things go in the 80gal. and see how many survives? I'm curious on how these fish will turn out and will local fish stores want them...

I have never heard of that mix. Are the parents showing much aggression towards there tankmates? I always seperate my breeding fish to lower the risk of them or the other tank inhabitants being seriously injured. I am definetly interested in seeing some pictures as they start to grow up.

The parents are guarding the fry relentlessly...... Tonight i'm putting the female con and fry into a 29gallon and let the fry grow-out a little bit and see what they look like, i've contacted a couple of LFS and they say they are very interested but not until they reach 1.5" or so...

why would the store want them?

I live in seattle and there are tons of Fish Stores around here because in this area the hobby is popular. Hybrids are more popular now then ever and if fish are attractive usually they go for a higher price due to them being rare. If these fry turn out looking really good i'll keep breeding them...........

well you wont ever know what they look like till long after the 1.5" mark. i dont see why the stores would want them. IMO most cichlids that breed with convicts dont end up producing very attractive babies. just because a fish is a hybrid doesnt make it rare. youd have to create a hybrid and then selectively breed for the traits you desire. you will in NO way end up with a whole batch of good looking fish. you may get one or two lookers but then youd have to take them and breed them back to one of the parent species and so on so forth until you create what you are looking for. it is not as simple as breeding two different species together. FH's didnt come around from just breeding tri macs to devils. there were numerous crosses and outcrosses made and the fish were ruthlessly culled unless they were showing the desired traits. all you are doing by creating hybrids like that is polluting a market with UNKNOWN quality fish. save these babies and grow your fish to size. keep the great ones and cull the rest or use them as feeders, whatever. then breed the best lookin babies back to a pure salvini, keep those babies and so on......get what im sayin. then give us some pics so we can see the mini monsters you have created!!! :headbang2 and by doing this you may get something unique and not common in the hobby. youd be able to actually get something for your time and effort. i dont think you could sell a batch of 300 of those as they are now for more than a few bucks......be patient and create something worthwhile
