Honestly. I love how easy it is to maintain my 300g with 9 large fish. But it's so boring and unnatural. I'm gonna do substrate in my 1000g

It's defiantly easier. Indeed unnatural but I think the painted black makes it look a little better than all shiny and as for your tile that looks great also.

I like the before picture way better. Why not go with the brown color sand if black color sand shows dirt too much?

Just good aquarium sand is too dang expensive and the cheap pool sand is like white and washes out the the fish. My older gravel I had as well was very light colored and I didn't get the full color potential from my fish that I wanted.

Have you looked into black diamond blasting media? Around here you can get it a the tractor supply store, I think it's 50 pounds for $8. I've seen a few ppl use it as a black substrate
