Have you looked into black diamond blasting media? Around here you can get it a the tractor supply store, I think it's 50 pounds for $8. I've seen a few ppl use it as a black substrate

Yeah that's what I was actually considering but apparently it shows a lot of junk too. I'm at a crossroads lol. I guess the black shows a lot of junk but at to be fair so does my painted black bottom too.

I use black diamond and love it! Think by me it's 10 and some change for a fifty pound bag. Just rinse it really well. And wen you think it's rinsed enough rinse it again hahah! But I love it! Waste isn't too apparent on it but with upkeep on water changes your in there anyway to clean what you do see

Just good aquarium sand is too dang expensive and the cheap pool sand is like white and washes out the the fish. My older gravel I had as well was very light colored and I didn't get the full color potential from my fish that I wanted.

Try a mix. I use about 80% pfs and add a bag or two of brown gravel or black sand to break things up.

Looks great minus those heaters.

Thanks G, haha I know, Im afriad to move them to the sump and risk it getting too cold. Maybe Ill try it on a weekend where Im home all day to monitor the temp. It gets quite chilly in my basement through the winter. My pump pushes 1500GPH from my 100 gallon sump. You think that would heat it enough. Keep in mind I have 3 heaters total. One is already in the sump.

Also Im done adding for a while but after a few hours of staring at R1s Cichla tank I kind of want to add some more greenery maybe a few more round stones and I would still like to get ahold of a piece of driftwood that doesnt rot. BUT im saving my cash right now for some Kels.

I said I was done for a while ha. Just ordered some driftwood that wont rot lol. Also some Java Moss and Anubias for some natural greenery

Yeah I actually just moved them down tonight so well see :/ there is 3 300watts in the big sump with the temp controller up top. Hope it holds lol. It's cold as usual here in NY so tonight will be a good test.

SOme sort of cover on the sump will help the heat stay in the tank/sump immensely.
Even if its saran wrap..ahahh.
