Hi,

I’m about to get set up for a solo Midas and hope you can advise me...

This is what I have so far (from previous setup);

- 340litre 90 US Gallon tank with sliding glass lid and solid wooden hood.
- 2 x Eheim Professional 3, 2075 / 600 filters.
- 1 x Eheim 3704 (400 lph) air-pump with 2 x Eheim adjustable air diffusers.
- 1 x Jewel Aquaheat 300w heater. (There were two, but the other one is in another tank now...)
- LED lighting system with control unit.

All of which (bar the air pump which was never used) has lain dormant for about 6 months, so I need to clean the filters... in what? I’ve read diluted mild bleach...?

I’d like big smooth rocks, one Manzanita type branch and I’ve been advised a thin layer of smooth gravel... All good there?

I was going to put a layer of eggcrate at the bottom, put the rocks and wood on top, then add gravel. This is to prevent the rocks from cracking the bottom of the glass if the gravel is all moved and the rocks shift. Is this a good idea?

I think I'd like 2 shatterproof heaters, just in case. Maybe 2 × Aqueon Pro 250w?

Any thoughts, comments, advice gratefully received.

Thanks

i think youre all set. i would just rinse the filter media thoroughly with clean water and cycle your tank and buy your midas!

the one 300w should be fine until you upgrade your heaters if you wish.

i like your rhetoric "lain dormant" as if you're about to explode upon the midas scene with volcanic force.

Ha! True, when you put it like that...!

Thanks for the reply...

I can get a bit carried away at the planning stage and over complicate things.

So I guess I have little to do.

If anybody has any thoughts on the idea of lining the bottom of the tank with eggcrate and anything to add to the heater bit, it would help me. I'd hate to have to remove the bloody stuff if it caused an issue and I've had heater disasters in the past, so I'm a tiny bit over cautious.

Otherwise I guess I can just crack on... (Poor choice of words...!!)

Cheers

as long as youre not dropping heavy rocks in the tank a lot i think its unnecessary. if you wanted the eggcrate to secure plants and stuff on then that could work i guess. idk. i change my substrates around sometimes so i prefer nothing getting in the way.

I just wanted to suggest, if you were so inclined, a raphael catfish for your tank as well. i have one with my midevil in a 75. only fish my midevil has ever tolerated...or isn't able to maul. does a great job cleaning up extra food too.

Thanks.

I think I'll drop the eggcrate idea. It's probably overkill...

I do like the idea of a catfish. I was considering some pleco or other, except that I want to keep the bioload down and for that reason had not planned any additional fish. A Raphael catfish is definitely one for me to research though. I know a few guys on here keep them and they sound interesting.

i also have a small sailfin pleco in there. the midevil chomps on his tail though so i may have to move him. the raphael is great cause he's scrappy though. midevil wants nothing to do with his spines.

do you plan to give him feeders?

Is it not dangerous for a larger predatory fish to have a smaller fish with spines in the tank?

I would like to give him feeders. I have some swordtails in another tank, which I hope to be the source for these. As I would know that they came out of a healthy tank, that they've been well treated and that they're found in Central America I see none of the usual arguments against, as long as they're a treat, rather than too often...

Do you offer feeders? What are they and where from...?
