Is it not dangerous for a larger predatory fish to have a smaller fish with spines in the tank?
I would like to give him feeders. I have some swordtails in another tank, which I hope to be the source for these. As I would know that they came out of a healthy tank, that they've been well treated and that they're found in Central America I see none of the usual arguments against, as long as they're a treat, rather than too often...
Do you offer feeders? What are they and where from...?
if anything they kinda compliment each other. theres the usual territorial displays and nipping from the devil but sometimes I'll catch them swimming around and feeding together. i meant to get some pictures and videos this morning. the only problem i see is if you get a decent sized midas and a tiny raphael, the midas may grow a lot faster and try to make a meal out of him, which could lead to the spine problem youre suggesting.
i used swordtails for a while before demand overtook my supply. all of my cichlids(flowerhorn, jd, oscar, and the devil) loved them, moreso than the minnows from the pet store it seemed. probably better that you're raising them yourself in a nice clean disease free tank.
until i get a new feeder operation set up he just eats red worms, bloodworms, and shrimp pellets.
edit: I've also heard people having a lot of success breeding convicts for feeders. seems like they produce a lot of fast growing fry. ive been thinking about doing the same with my blue acaras since they breed so readily.
