Is it not dangerous for a larger predatory fish to have a smaller fish with spines in the tank?

I would like to give him feeders. I have some swordtails in another tank, which I hope to be the source for these. As I would know that they came out of a healthy tank, that they've been well treated and that they're found in Central America I see none of the usual arguments against, as long as they're a treat, rather than too often...

Do you offer feeders? What are they and where from...?

if anything they kinda compliment each other. theres the usual territorial displays and nipping from the devil but sometimes I'll catch them swimming around and feeding together. i meant to get some pictures and videos this morning. the only problem i see is if you get a decent sized midas and a tiny raphael, the midas may grow a lot faster and try to make a meal out of him, which could lead to the spine problem youre suggesting.

i used swordtails for a while before demand overtook my supply. all of my cichlids(flowerhorn, jd, oscar, and the devil) loved them, moreso than the minnows from the pet store it seemed. probably better that you're raising them yourself in a nice clean disease free tank.

until i get a new feeder operation set up he just eats red worms, bloodworms, and shrimp pellets.

edit: I've also heard people having a lot of success breeding convicts for feeders. seems like they produce a lot of fast growing fry. ive been thinking about doing the same with my blue acaras since they breed so readily.

Yes please. Any photos / videos are always good...!

I intend to buy a small group of juvenile Midas (probably about 3 inch) and then thin out to my favourite one.

I guess the Raphael (or other... actually, I like the look of Jaguar Catfish if I can find one and they're not as expensive as they look!) would have to be a decent size to keep up with the Midas in the initial growth spurt...

And yeah, I'd love a pair of Convicts for feeders, but I don't have anywhere to put them. Maybe I'll convince the Mrs it'd be a nice idea for the kids to have their own tank and suggest Convicts... win win! ;)

i have a jaguar cat in my south american community. very cool and beautiful fish but i would not put him in with the devil. he doesn't have those spines that the raphael does. plus their skin is super delicate in comparison to the raph.

jags are similar to raphs in behavior but i would say the raph is more active, just not as pretty. the jag only really comes out in total darkness.

i paid 50 usd for a 4 inch wild caught jag from rapps. dont think he has any more in stock right now though he does have chocolate raphaels *drool*

Fare enough... I knew they looked too good to be true, I hadn't researched them properly, just knew they were similar...

Thanks for the advice.

How big is your Jag?

They look stunning!

i mean if you want to try it you can. like i said the jag was on the pricier side for me whereas my raphael was free so it was an easy decision.

seriously though, look up those chocolate raphaels, acanthadoras cataphractus. if i wasnt packed to the gills in all my tanks i would get 2 or 3 of those beauties. every bit as nice as the jags at least.

Nice chunky chap...!

I'll definitely consider the Raphael... I guess they wouldn't add so much bioload as a pleco.
