New setup for my 2, 4" sun cats

Lovely.

I am not sure how you'd like to use the two 10 gal?

I'd make a cut out in two side panels and joint them for twice the length and the same width. I'd leave a substantial area of the glass to act as the middle brace, just cut through enough for fish to cross easily from one chamber into the other. This may make it interesting too to see how fish will utilize two distinct chambers.

that does sound interesting. I was flirting with the idea of doing a connecting tunnel but that sounds a bit more interesting. Maybe even black out the remaining connecting panels so each side is only visible to the fish from near the top. I was also thinking of using the front, back, and two side panels from each to make an octagon with 4 20" sides and 4 10" sides. The bottom would be either an appropriate size piece of laminated glass (I own a auto glass bussiness so it's very available) or a piece of single pain from the hardware store.

Octagon sounds more challenging but you will learn more too :) Perhaps the safe water level can't be as high in the octagon scenario then. IDK. Plus of course there'd be a gap to fill in the joints between the panels, adding a little bit more care and work.

That was my thought too but i can do windshield adhesive on the outside of the joints and silicone inside. I've made a 65 gallon rimless with no bracing out of windshield adhesive but busted the tank moving it. A school of about 20 mollies and a crapload of ghost shrimp lived there for about 3 years.

You probably know more but I'd stay away from the adhesive. I believe there is no need either - silicon will hold the octagon with proper preparation. If worried, one can silicone a narrow strip on the inside of each seam too.

There is some slow diffusion of chemicals through cured silicone and I'd not be comfortable.

about how many gallons do you think that would be? I'm sure silicone would hold but i tend to over think in the beginning and simplify in the end.

I'm not too worried about the windshield adhesive as a sealant, I tested it with ghost shrimp because they would be sensitive most any chemical leeching and it dries to a solid rubber slab all the way through if allowed to cure properly. That tank had very little water changes, heavy plant load, and a single fry filter, not one fatality other than when I'd take mollies and shrimp to feed the bigger fish lol.

Having briefly pondered it, I think the octagon won't be much more than the sum of two 10 gal. I need to draw it to scale to calculate.

Maybe ~30 gal but you might need to drop the water level as I mentioned.

A 20*20*12 cube is 20 gallons but that's a decent sized footprint and they don't need much vertical swimming room or maybe just connect them long ways and brace the middle

The 40 is up and running. A little cloudy still and I've yet to figure out what my permanent lighting is, but the fish are happy. Picked this pretty yellow Dalmatian Molly up a few days ago, she's in my wife's 55 community tank. Also got some good shots of bullhead today. His curiosity towards everything is awesome. He'll follow other fish, chew bricks, plays in the pothos roots, and makes sure he's front and center when he sees/hears me coming. Anyways, Sorry for rambling, lol, any thoughts on the scape for the 40, it'll have a few anubius and java fern next chance I have to pick some. Any thoughts on what to do with two ten gallons to make a new tank for my convict pair?
