I am finally starting back up my aquariumsafter having them down for a few years now. I have a 150gal. I have had multiple different types of cichlids (Oscar's, Green Terrors, Red Terrors, Jack Dempsey, Blue Rams), Piranhaso, Gars, Arowanas, etc. My lady just gave me the space to set up the tank. She wants something for colorfull and active. I think I'd like to stay with freshwater and Cichlid famiky. Looking for suggestions and open to anything other than common Africans. This will be my tank just trying to get her interested in it as well. Please and thank you.

If you like American cichlids, that 150g would be a good sized tank to do a small community of them. I'd go for something along the lines of one large centerpiece fish (12-14" max) and 3 smaller fish (5-8" max). For large fish, you don't want something that's an absolute killer. A good suggestion would be a Vieja Regani. For the smaller fish, some ideas would be Honduran red points, nicaraguense, thoricthys species, salvini. There are many more that would work.

You could do my idea where you have a nice spangly male Carpintis, a small group of Rokteil sevs, and a group of HRPs along with a school of Roseline barbs with some nice aquascaping.
