All right I think I will be purchasing 8 multies from one of my LFS's. If I were to lower that number to 4 would I be able to get another small species of shelly or are the multies better off alone.

They will be better off alone. When you put 2 species in together, whichever one is tougher usually claims all the shells, and your left having to remove the weaker species. I have seen multiple shellie species work well in really large tanks(6-8 ft)

Thanks shellies I will keep that in mind when I set up my 55 Tanganyikan.

Also I wanted to ask how this stocking sounds; one 3in bristlenosed plecostomus, 7 multies, and about 25 shells throughout the tank. Also are there any plants I could put in there and still maintain the semi-biotope.

ive kept gold occies and blacks and multies in the smae 55. 3 pairs. Multies never left a 4 inch square of two shells and sand. Golds bred and hammered on the speciosus. Honestly 20 gallon longs are the ideal species shell dweller tank. You get to see all of their cool habits.

sHellies only up root plants if they are near their shells, or near where they want their shells to be.

I figured that they would uproot the plants, but what I was wondering is if there are any plants that are native to the rift lakes and/or other lakes in Africa.

I think you should purchase a group and let them court it out your setup sounds good and like stated before they like shells for the most part. Greg at littleafricaaqutics is a super guy and has some of the best fish out there look into him he will not dissapoint you I bought some fish from him and haven't bought any fish from anywhere else since he has a lot to choose from
