New Silver Aro - How long before I see that reflective silver color/shimmer?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My silver is about 20+ inches and its silver sheen never really evened out. Entirely silver except for top of its back which is darker tint. Despite my profile name, I never gave it live feeders...although a couple small parrot fishes disappeared one day. Only pellets for this guy.

WOW...Amazing colors. You should really embrace its natural colors instead of want it to turn into a super shinny fish. That yellow tail coloring is amazing and not all juvenile silver aros come in that color. Nor do they all turn the same color when they fully matured. However since you really like the silver shine, you should stay away from color enhancing foods. A buddy of mine had an arow that looks just like yours when it was small. He fed it raw shrimp at about that size everyday. It got to 32 inches before it died, but as a result of the shrimp diet, all its natural colors faded away and it turned very very silver and shinny, almost platinum-like. In my opinion, the most beautiful silver arowanas are the ones that reflect the colors of those from the wild.

Very informative, thank you. I do not dislike my Aro's color at all. I suppose I was just under the impression that all Silver Arowanas turn into that shiny silver. At this point it only feeds on freeze dried krill, bloodworms and live feeders. I am training it to do away with live feeders and substitute food sticks/pellets, freeze dried brine and tubifex but no success.

I've read that freeze-dried food can cause problems for Arowanas. Does this apply to all brands of freeze dried foods? or just the cheap one?
