New snakehead set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
From what I'm seeing as far as plants you have java fern and anubias. Both of which grow really slowly. As well it looks like some of the anubias are hastifolia, which in my experience are hard to grow aquatically. Grows far better emmersed.

Edit:

I figured I would attach some pics of my planted gar tank. Not a channa tank, as they are illegal here unfortunately. But I modelled it after a channa tank.

Pothos usually isn't hanging down the front like that. Did an overhaul on the plants the other day and have a little work to do still.IMG_0431[1].JPG

Tank is done up with a couple different lily species, vals, crypts, crinums, duckweed. As well have the pothos, philodendrons and hoyas growing with their roots submerged.

Ahh okay... I have 2 amazon swords as well which grow fairly swiftly, so you think it's worth getting a load of floating plants?

Bloody hell!! That's is quite a jungle...can you even see the fish in that lot!? Cool I will have a look through and get more plants in when I can afford.

Jungle is definitely right. This is after I trimmed back some plants the other day. There are no fish in there right now, in the process of moving around some of the stock. When there are fish they seem to alternate between the clear space at the front or hiding among the vals.

I see dirt on your sand, so I assume you have a substrate under it.
That's good. if you want a cheap jungle, buy 5-10 vallisneria.
In about a month to two, you'll have small vallisneria growing everywhere, that you can even cut and replant where you want, for that tank or any other.

I used to keep my vals in my channa tanks and take new roots for new tanks whenever I felt I didn't need more!

As for the pulchras, they're fated to die, and in my opinion, monitoring won't help. My pair killed six other aurantis I tried to reintroduce because I wasn't sure they were a pair over night. And there is no exaggeration. The six died, all of them, in one night. Two of them were literally split in half. None got eaten, it was just pure gruesome aggression.

Yeah I am not a huge fan of the look of valis... it just looks dull to me. But I willl see what I can do.

As far as aggression goes which SH will be the likely offender? the auranti is on his own (as they are hard to come by at the moment due to floods in the native area) and I couldn't afford anymore £90 each!

And the 2 pulchra are tiny by comparison and were in a tank with 10 others.

Imo the auranti will always have the size advantage.
A real pair will still face it together, but I think they're doomed more than the auranti is.
