Yeah it's a spiny, not a Chinese softy.

One of the main concerns with softshells is fungus, and I'm concerned that it seems to have some on the shell. Try giving it daily soaks in salt baths (1 teaspoon of aquarium tonic salt per litre) for 10-15 minutes.

Has it bitten you yet? ;)

Paul

It's not fungus. Its just scratches/damage to the shell (i looked closely). Would it help to add salt to the pond, or do you really think I should do a salt bath in a separate tub?

Hey were they selling it for food?

Yes they were. My friend decided it was too cool to let someone eat it, so he bought it. He doesn't have anywhere to put it, so he gave it to me. My gf wasn't happy at first, but she had already named it within 2 hours of it being at my house ;)

Are there any other fish that could share the pond with her? I've got some shortnose gars that are going to be outgrowing their tank in the next couple months, and I need somewhere to put them.

Also, the chinese store was selling barramundi and tilapia :D.

Another question. Since they're native to this area, they should be able to withstand the winters here, correct? Will I need to do anything special for her besides keep her pond free of ice over the winter? Will I need to keep it heated above a certain temp, or will she basically go into hibernation once it gets cold enough?

Sorry, I'm quite new to turtles, and didn't have the chance to plan ahead for this.

Softshells are murderous with other turtles, biting off tails, limbs, heads, etc. Also...basking turtles scratch up their shells with their nails. All fish are likely to get eaten or mauled as well. Best kept alone!

Awesome find though, very cool!

She should be fine outside. Let the mulm and mud accumulate at the bottom of the pond; this will give her a place to burrow in for winter. No need to heat it; keeping an air hole open is all that is needed.
