New Sp of Poly ??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't the dorsal finlets look like they come up the body kind of far to be a moke? Moke have more of a gray belly also than fish in the picture, I know water can change color and there are several varient colors, but that polypterus looks more like retro or teugulsi on the belly side than a moke. Moke to me are a skinny bichir and pattern doesn't match at all imo, very hard to tell from the picture but I am going with being a varient of retro just on the pics. Pretty fat to be a moke, and far too small for the body width to be a teugulsi at the current length. Either way different.. and I'd order. If I guessed I'd say retropinnis and all look like the same species. Your supplier asking alot for these guys?

The finlets of the moke in the pics doesn't even show up so how did you tell that the finlets are to far up? Lol! The bichir above is a retro and the bichir below is a moke. BTW tuegelsi are found in Cameroon not Congo. Also tuegelsi is more elongated.

They are bit pricey becuz they have not seen this poly before. so they are thinking its a new sp. even though it seems many here have good reason to believe its just a retro and moke. which they sell but this color variation seems to persuade them its differant. i know nothing about this fish so im at the mercy of those who are in the know.

I know what my fish look like and I know were my fish were collected. I have eyes, can watch my fish swim around in my tank, and read too. I didn't say it was a teugulsi and I know what one looks like as I stated in my first post. I was describing the top fish in the picture as not being a moke because of the dorsal finlets. As for price I'd charge alot too, even if it ends up just being a moke and retro like you people say. Mokelembebe at a size like that would bring some $$$ same with retro. If it is new BIG $ until you check availability. As for the bottom picture, mokes I have are gray on the belly side not yellow like the look the teugulsi, retro, and the palmas sp.. Neither is moke fat like some of the other species discovered.
Anyone have a moke in a tank as fat as the fish in the picture?? that is an LOL.

I have a moke 7" moke as fat as that pound per pound if comparison, with orange belly. Moke's belly can varied to tan, brown, reddish brown, orange to buff. Even a retro and a tuegelsi will look fat if they are being over feed too much, but not as thick as the polli though.

Yeah, one of my mokes is just as fat as that one. Really interesting pics, they look good no matter what they are.

Thanks for the caption, king-el. Again to reiterate, the top fish is a retropinnis, and bottom fish is a mokelembembe. The dark color makes the retro a bit unusual looking, and as you mentioned BraveheartCalif, it could be due to the black water, but the moke looks pretty normal as far as color/patterns go. Also, being out of water can make them look darker, although the retro is probably pretty dark to begin with.

hopefully it's clear now they are NOT all the same species, and yes top one is a retro and bottom is moke.

And regarding the size, both fish are big, but they're not unusually big to be honest. From the first pic, you can estimate the retro to be around 13" or so, a good adult size, but not $$$ big for sure. Also, that would make the moke around 10"-11", which seems as big as they come for the most part, but certainly not $$$ big either. And yes a female moke can get fat like in the pic, but of course it'll never be fat like a palmas polli or some of the other thicker species. Don't forget too the fish is placed upside down out of water, which can make the belly 'sag' a little and look wider than it is, especially if the fish is dead. And as for the belly color on the moke, nothing out of the ordinary either.
