usually the specimens collected for scientific descriptions were collected, preserved, scientific data taken, measured. so dead. the holotypes are usually stored in a museum somewhere around the world, like the smithsonian in DC.

sometimes photos of new species have not been published for various reasons, availability, or held back for various reasons.

again I think this thread should be pinned up and would add some scientific value to this board!
