New Species of Giant Fish Arapaima Discovered in Brazil

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think this has been posted here before but some may have missed it.

Yup I recall hearing about this last year when I was still on WW instead of MFK. Really neat though, I'm sure some people didn't hear about it.

Has anyone heard CONFIRMED scientific data that the one Jeremy Wade caught was a new specie? In the episode Lair Of Giants I believe, they say something about it in the show but I'd like to hear it from a different source.

Apparently it turns out this species has been aware of for a long time but not actually reclassified. A lot of google pictures of current arapaima have been identified as the new species, including a public aquarium in Ukraine is reported to have these. Maybe even some pima keepers here have them!

It's not a new discovery of a type of arapaima, it's just how 'they' (guys in lab coats) want to classify them. To me they are finding differences in local populations - not really finding new species.
The problem is a lot of the classification was originally done in a time where IDs were based on scientific pencil sketches and old accounts from the explorers that origianlly pushed into the Amazon. Not exactly the most up to date methods.
