New Spin on using CINDER Blocks for Aquarium Stands

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You've just set off a bunch of ideas for my next stand. I was going with cinder blocks, but hadn't thought about the spray paint. I love the idea. I guess I gotta start making some cool stencils....or get some sharpies.

I have spray painted 30 cinder blocks black on three sides.(2 long sides and one small side) I used the flat coat paint. It took 5 cans of spray paint. Home Depot had them for $0.97 a can.

I was going to use the wood we had cut tonight, but I should have measured to leave room for fish food or anything that needs to sit on the wood temporarily($24.97 X2) I might just use the cut wood to go underneath the bottom of the cinder blocks.

I will probably waterproof the wood tommorrow and hopefully it will be dry by set up time tommorrow evening. Guy at Home Depot said use two coats. I am not sure if I am going to spray the wood black or not.

If I didn't have to buy wood again, with 2 guys(labor X 8 hours) this project will have run about $140.00 so tack on another $56.00(shims, 2 sheets of wood) Grand total will be $196.00

Great price at $196.00 right? No it gets better!!!!! Combined a 20 gallon long, 40 gallon breeder, 75 gallon breeder and 55 gallon tank all get stands for $196.00

Anyone use cinder blocks on larger tank stands ? I have a 84"x24" , 270G Id like to see if i can set up this way ?

I've been using blocks for yrs. I create a nice plywood skin that attaches with velco. It's similar to the way they do it on metal stands. I got sick of lugging huge 2x4 etc frames around and it's a breeze to level.

Yep I had a 240 setup with blocks. I used 6 stacks of blocks. 1 supporting every corner and 2 in the middle. I had it a concrete slab and used ply wood with foam board on top to fine tune leveling it. It was the 1st one I did like this a matter of fact

I believe per ASTM concrete blocks must support a min of 1700lbs per sq inch
