This is just as inhumane as cutting off all of their fins. I don't see why these fishermen think its so much better.

But hey, at least they're not actually killing the sharks, ya know?

It's bad, I have to admit, but like TheSaltwaterGuy said, they are letting the sharks live which is somewhat better than killing the animal for only some parts.
We sit on our pompous chairs eating every animal in the US, hunted to extinction and somehow we feel we are better.
I just think that most of the fisherman who do this have done this for generations. That IS their culture, not ours.
Just my $0.02

Cutting off the dorsal fin of a shark and throwing it back in the ocean would be like dragging you into the forest and cutting off one of your legs and leaving you there to survive on your own surrounded by grizzly bears and wolves. What percentage of those sharks do you think actually make it? Probably very few. He just saw the one blacktip alive. Most of them were probably eaten by other predators.

I get that shark finning is a long standing tradition. But their tradition is costing us our planet.

Well, this is 2008 - it's time to come up to date with the real world. Slaves and women not voting were are part of US culture... but we ended that (for the most part). No one will convince me finners don't know it's wrong. All of them do it in secret or hide what they are doing.

None of these sharks will live long term. Removal of the dorsal is a death sentence as much as cutting them all off.

Just out of curiousity.... what animals in the US have we eaten into extinction? It's not eating sharks that is wiping them out, it's illegal finning.

I couldn't agree more, Matt and Melissa. Wanton waste is the saddest thing. Won ton waste is also very sad. Those things are delicious!

Yeah - as Matt & Melissa basically pointed out. It's still just as bad.

While cutting off just the dorsal fin may not be an instant death for the sharks out right. But it certainly means that the shark will die -either a slow & painful death by starvation or a death from being picked off by another predator. Either way removing the shark's dorsal fin is a death sentence - because that are basically a crippled predator. And Crippled predators don't last long in the wild (be it land or sea).
