Just out of curiousity.... what animals in the US have we eaten into extinction? It's not eating sharks that is wiping them out, it's illegal finning.

Maybe extinction was the wrong word choice. More like.... hunt every naturally occurring animal in the wild, figure out what we like, then breed them like mad to satisfy our urge for meat.
I suppose the solution would be to farm raise sharks and use all the body parts for something.
I understand the sentiments posted, but I still say this is a culture difference.
I remember going out on a deep sea fishing trip for Bluefin tuna when I was in Japan. The first tuna we caught had it's heart cut out and eaten by us fishermen. The carcass was thrown back into the sea as a gesture of honor and thanks to the ocean.

All in all, I'm not disagreeing.

just like whaleing this stuff sikens me

Ever heard of buffalo wings? Now they are chicken but they used to be american buffalo which only exists today in a population of 300.

This is what makes me want to get an education faster. This is also why I volunteer with an aquarium. What we need to do educate the public who have no idea what is going on or they believe we should kill sharks anyway. If you haven't heard there is this movie http://www.sharkwater.com/
I have not personally seen it I'm waiting for the DVD but it looks really good. It clears up a lot of misconceptions and supports shark conservation.
Every time I see shark finning or hatred of sharks I get extremely pissed off.
If we never educate the public no one will know its wrong and if a law tries to get passed who will vote for it. The people who hate sharks? I think not we need to educate to preserve these awesome spectacular creatures. We all need to do something to stop it. No matter how small you may think it is just do something to help. It could be even just telling a friend you know 100 million sharks are killed every year and 0.5 people are kiled by sharks in the U.S. every year. More people are killed by coconuts every year than by sharks. So maybe just volunteer at a zoo or aquarium. I personally want to dedicate my life to educating people about shark conservation and research these amazing organisms.

A shark will die wihout the dorsal. Without it, they can't swim correctly... meaning the can't hunt / eat.

There are limits to what is still acceptable though. While my examples are abit extreme should we allow 50 year old men to marry 8 year olds, Headhunters and cannibal's, human sacrifice ect just because they where once part of someones culture?
